When the Oregon Wild office was moving their Central Oregon office after being in The Environmental Center for over 25 years, they had a lot to sort through. Including these maps. After gleaning the maps for ones they wanted to keep – and were current – hundred of maps were no longer needed. Hence, vintage Oregon map journals.
There are so many things I love about these maps. They are old – most are from late 60’s to mid 70’s. For many of these locations, a current map would look different. Thanks to the work Oregon Wild has done over the years, most of that change is in urban areas and not in the wild land they have worked to protect. I also love seeing the land represented on topo maps – the colors, the contours, the birds eye view, the feel of paper. With a move to digital maps, these maps – and the skill to read it – are slipping away from popular knowledge. But the thing I love the most, is how incorporating maps into journals switches on my creative brain when I write, make lists or doodle in them. I’m so glad I can create journals for others to find that same inspiration.
